Description

This is my first digital portrait, done about a week before Autumn Angel Autumn Angel by  DigitalDust , as a commission for a Christmas gift.

Again, I was trying to emulate my oil painting technique, though a bit looser, and have this printed to canvas.

The final was very convincing and the recipients thought it was an oil painting. When I explained how I did it, they seemed even more impressed - and with the money it saved them off my regular portrait pricing, who wouldn't be?!!! :)

Painter 8 and Wacom I2.

He's adorable Darren! His eyes are stunning. The background adds nicely to the composition. My only crit ... there is a small bluish smudge mark on his right cheek (left from our point of view)

Great job!

Oh my a 10 for sure...Wonderful portrait work. Babies are the absolute hardest to paint for you must stay soft but still you can't be that soft....This looks very much like oils. Great job.

This is awesome man!! +10, Maybe could you desaturate it a little, tiny bit?? I think you have a better handle on the oil stroke reproduction than most.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful response! I'm flattered!

I'd actually thought Autumn Angel was technically a better, more evocative piece, but it seems most can't resist a cherubic tot!

A few responses:
Michelle - The "smudge" is a dimple below his cheek catching reflection from the shirt - it's supposed to be there, but perhaps not pulled off as well as it could be.

Dream Theater - Sorry, no speakie whatever gibberish that is!

Whizzy - Still debating whether making digital look like oil is a good thing or not - does it matter? I dunno, it's just kind of the way I paint, and until a digipainting "looks" like what I'm used to seeing, I keep going on it - virtue or vice(?)

KKat - I'm actually fighting tendencies to put too much detail in - trying to make it looser. Don't know if I've struck a compatible balance for myself yet either.

Again, thanks everyone for you comments!

I think, that the shades on his eyes are too strong, but anyway he's so cute!

solid portrait work, but it really means nothing to me more than a child smiling, to the people who's child this is, i'm sure its priceless...your right in that your other piece is much more evocative...i'm sure since this is a commissioned piece you made what was expected, and didn't get much artistic license ....besides this showing that you are a damn competent portrait artist it doesn't say much else....i for one am a much bigger fan of your imagination...

but anyways, tell me about this printing onto canvas technique...whats it called, hows it work, i am very interested....

Exactly like a picture, but just so that you can tell it's a painting. Impressive work! How do you people do it? =P Um, since I'm not very good at critiquing paintings, I'd also just point out the blue smudge...thing. But that's about it!

Thanks again all.

PG5 - Yes, just pretty much straight up portraiture. I've seen some artists who try to invoke "artsy" embellishment to their portraits, but that's not the purpose on this piece.

I shot the photo for Autumn Angel so did have creative control at the onset on that one, and is more my "style" of portraying someone.

Tell you what, you tell me how you get that "vector style" with PSCS and photos and I'll tell you a bit more about this printing to canvas thing... deal?!!! ;)

Hey, that's really really good! Quite natural! It is definetely like oil painting which is a big plus!!! Too bad he is not your son, else I would have said congratulations!!!!

Can't believe I've missed this one. Great technique, the kid looks nice and shiny :) Maybe making his eyes a tiny bit lighter as  curlyhair has mentioned would look even better?
I like this painting. Very Christmas =)
